Job Overview

The Mining Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring comprehensive safety programs at BHP’s mining sites in the Garoowe region. This role ensures compliance with international safety standards, Somali mining regulations and BHP’s internal policies. The officer will lead safety audits, risk assessments, incident investigations and emergency response planning, fostering a culture of zero harm across all operational activities. By collaborating closely with site managers, engineers, contractors and local authorities, the Mining Safety Officer will drive continuous improvement initiatives that protect workers, the community and the environment. In addition to day‑to‑day safety oversight, the Mining Safety Officer will serve as a key advisor on safety‑related matters during project planning, equipment procurement and workforce training. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain site‑specific safety management systems aligned with BHP global standards.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, hazard identification and risk assessments across all mining operations.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
• Coordinate emergency response drills, evacuation procedures and first‑aid training for all personnel.
• Ensure compliance with Somali mining legislation, international standards (e.g., ISO 45001) and BHP internal policies.
• Provide safety training, toolbox talks and competency assessments for workers and contractors.
• Prepare and present safety performance reports to senior management and regulatory bodies.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations and community liaison teams to integrate safety considerations into project design and execution.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English; knowledge of Somali is an advantage.
• Proven experience conducting safety audits and incident investigations.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in mining safety management, preferably within large‑scale operations. Experience working in East Africa or similar emerging markets is advantageous, as is a demonstrated track record of reducing incident rates and improving safety culture.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from SSP 2,500,000 to SSP 3,500,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The compensation package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
