Job Overview

The Chief Data Privacy Officer (CDPO) will lead HSBC’s data privacy strategy in Somalia, ensuring compliance with local regulations and global standards such as GDPR and the African Union’s data protection framework. The CDPO will design, implement, and monitor privacy policies, conduct risk assessments, and serve as the primary liaison with regulators, auditors, and internal stakeholders. This senior position reports to the Regional Head of Compliance and plays a pivotal role in protecting sensitive information while enabling business innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce a comprehensive data privacy program aligned with Somali law and international best practices.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments for new products, services, and technology initiatives.
  • Lead incident response for data breaches, including investigation, reporting, and remediation.
  • Advise senior management on privacy risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Train employees across all departments on data protection principles and practices.
  • Collaborate with IT, Legal, and Risk teams to embed privacy by design into system architectures.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date documentation of privacy policies, procedures, and records of processing activities.
  • Represent HSBC in regulatory inquiries and audits, ensuring timely and accurate responses.

Required Skills

  • Deep knowledge of data protection laws in Somalia, the EU GDPR, and other relevant frameworks.
  • Proven experience designing and managing enterprise‑wide privacy programs.
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical business solutions.
  • Leadership experience managing cross‑functional teams.
  • Certification such as CIPP/E, CIPP/A, or CIPM is highly desirable.

Education

A Master’s degree in Law, Information Security, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in privacy or data security strengthen the candidate’s profile.

Experience

Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in data privacy, information security, or compliance, with at least five years in a senior leadership role within the financial services sector.

Salary
