Job Overview
This role is part of Tetra Tech’s initiative to strengthen Somalia’s preparedness for climate-related disasters. The Disaster Risk Reduction Officer will lead community-based projects to assess vulnerabilities, design mitigation strategies, and train local stakeholders in emergency response. The position requires collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, and international donors to implement scalable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct risk assessments for natural disasters (floods, droughts, etc.) in rural and urban areas
- Develop community resilience programs including early warning systems and evacuation plans
- Coordinate with local authorities to integrate disaster risk reduction into urban planning
- Train community leaders and first responders in emergency preparedness protocols
- Monitor and report on project impact using GIS and data analytics tools
Required Skills
- Expertise in disaster risk assessment frameworks (UNDRR Sendai Framework)
- Proficiency in GIS mapping and spatial analysis
- Strong community engagement and cross-cultural communication skills
- Experience with climate change adaptation strategies
- Ability to work in remote and resource-constrained environments
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or related field
- Master’s degree preferred (Climate Resilience, Public Policy, or Disaster Management)
Experience
- 3-5 years in disaster risk reduction or environmental planning
- Previous experience in Somalia or the Horn of Africa region is an advantage
Salary
3,000–4,500 SSP/month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Working Environment
