Job Overview
This role focuses on designing, implementing, and monitoring aquaculture projects in Somalia to promote sustainable fish farming practices. The specialist will collaborate with coastal and inland communities to improve fish production, enhance aquatic biodiversity, and support climate-resilient fisheries. The position is based in Jowhar and reports directly to the Regional Fisheries Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute aquaculture development plans aligned with national food security goals.
- Conduct feasibility studies for fish farm establishment in collaboration with local stakeholders.
- Provide technical training to farmers on sustainable aquaculture practices, including pond management and disease prevention.
- Monitor water quality, fish health, and environmental impacts of aquaculture projects.
- Coordinate with government agencies to ensure compliance with fisheries regulations and environmental standards.
- Prepare reports on project outcomes and publish findings in scientific and policy forums.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in aquaculture project design and implementation.
- Strong knowledge of fish biology, aquatic ecosystems, and sustainable harvesting techniques.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and community outreach abilities.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting using GIS or statistical software.
- Fluency in Somali and English, with basic understanding of local fishing traditions.
- Experience working in remote or resource-limited environments.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred but not mandatory.
Experience
3–5 years of professional experience in aquaculture development, fisheries management, or environmental conservation. Prior work in Somalia or the Horn of Africa region is a significant advantage.
Salary
800,000 – 1,200,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience.
