Job Overview

The Coastal Erosion Mitigation Specialist will lead technical assessments, design adaptive infrastructure solutions, and coordinate with local stakeholders to implement erosion control measures. This role is critical to safeguarding Tulowak’s coastal ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of over 15,000 residents dependent on marine resources. The position requires collaboration with Somalian government agencies, NGOs, and international partners to ensure long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys and geospatial analyses to assess coastal erosion patterns.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of bioengineering and hard engineering solutions (e.g., mangrove restoration, seawall construction).
  • Develop community engagement strategies to promote sustainable coastal land use practices.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders, including the Ministry of Environment and local councils.
  • Monitor project impact using remote sensing and ground-truthing techniques.

Required Skills

  • Expertise in coastal hydrodynamics and sediment transport modeling.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Experience with international climate resilience frameworks (e.g., IPCC guidelines).
  • Strong project management skills, including budgeting and timeline coordination.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Somali.

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Coastal Management, or related field.
  • Certification in Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) or similar program preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years in coastal engineering or environmental consultancy, with 2+ years in Somalia or East Africa.
  • Proven track record in managing multi-stakeholder projects in fragile environments.

Salary

1,200,000 – 1,800,000 SSP annually, commensurate with experience.
