Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Specialist to lead complex environmental studies and regulatory compliance projects in the region. This role is critical for ensuring that major infrastructure, energy, and industrial developments in Somalia are conducted in an environmentally responsible and socially equitable manner. You will be responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of environmental assessments, from initial scoping and baseline studies to mitigation planning and post-project monitoring.

The successful candidate will act as a primary technical advisor to stakeholders, including government agencies, private developers, and international NGOs. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for diverse sectors.
  • Conduct detailed baseline studies involving biodiversity, soil, water, and air quality assessments.
  • Develop robust Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP) to mitigate potential project impacts.
  • Liaise with government regulatory bodies to secure necessary environmental permits and clearances.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, sociologists, and hydrologists to integrate environmental considerations into project design.
  • Monitor project compliance with environmental mitigation measures and report on performance metrics.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to junior environmental scientists and field technicians.

Required Skills

  • Advanced expertise in EIA methodologies and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Strong proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and environmental modeling software.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills for producing high-quality assessment reports.
  • Deep understanding of international sustainability standards (IFC, World Bank).
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects with multiple moving parts and deadlines.

Education

A Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline is mandatory. A PhD in a specialized field of environmental management is highly preferred.

Experience

Candidates must possess a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in environmental consulting or environmental management. Proven experience working in East Africa or within developing economies is a significant advantage. You must demonstrate a track history of leading large-scale environmental assessments for major infrastructure or energy projects.

Salary
